Granite mex mex ?

Aaron Sep 14, 2006 01:01 PM

This is a female mex mex I got from some Texas breeders who said they got their stock from Dennie Miller a long time ago. I know there is no way to know for sure until test breeding is done but I am wondering if this is the same as the "granite" mex mex Gsc has and that Don Shores has. Anybody have any opinions?
If it is I will be pretty stoked since I got 2.1 of them for $150 but the other two are not nearly as speckled.

Nice looking animal...and wow- you got a KILLER deal. You should check with Don Shores about his bloodline info (I'd like to know also). If you don't get a reply, let me know (gcriglow@gmail.com) and I'll try emailing to find out.

Any which way that is a fine looking animal and the price was a steal. Hopefully it proves out to be what you're hoping for.

Very nice. If you keep working with them, you'll produce some very speckled ones I think. Every once in a while, I'll get a hatchling or two with more than usual.(none yet as nice as in the pic)
About the time I give up on producing more, I see a nice one like yours and regret not working more dilligently to produce them.
Very nice indeed. It will go a long way, I think, towards getting the mexicana more recogntion.

Here's a couple of shots of the granite mex mex I got from Mark Bell at Daytona this year. You can see the female is REALLY speckled. There is a lot of variation. Some that have a lot of red and still very discernible blotches are called "speckled" (at least by Mark Bell). These cost $750 each. Your is really nice and looks similar to my male which was sold as a granite.

Great looking mexicana and certainly the same trait. From what I’ve seen, lateral speckling is very common in most bloodlines and what folks are calling Granite is simply an exaggerated version. Eventually the saddles begin to completely break up and become speckled dorsally. I have a couple from Don, one extremely speckled female and another not so speckled from the same line, both outstanding looking mex mex but I haven’t seen a clutch yet that is 100% phenotype speckled or Granite. I’ll send you a few photos. I have a young male from a completely different bloodline that looks nearly identical to this animal in your pic, his sibs and parents having nothing close to the amount of speckling he has.

Yes mak I think it is possible the granite pattern may be codom or something. I hope I can produce some like Mike Murphy's eventually because that thing is smokin'.

Agreed... and I think Mike's female is one of the best I've seen by a long shot and that male is pretty smokin' himself.

Also I remember now it was $200 I paid for the trio, not $150.
