Walsh 2002 Clown Phase BRB

Jeff Clark Sep 14, 2006 10:52 PM

...This is one of my two females from the litter that the late Gary Walsh produced in 2002. The sister of this snake has an even more aberrant pattern than this snake but with a washed out tan color. The orange color of this snake and the tan color of her sister are well outside the normal range of color variation of Brazilian Rainbow Boas. Both of the snakes have been picky feeders. This one is less than 5 feet long. Her sister is larger but apparently still not quite large enough to produce a viable litter. She looked and acted gravid a few months back but now seems to not be gravid. The litter these snakes were born in had around a dozen snakes in it and around half of them were aberrant in color and/or pattern. This might indicate that these snakes carry a dominant heritable gene for the odd colors and pattern but as far as I know none of the animals from the litter have yet reproduced.

Very odd pattern. I love the washed out head too. Nice pics.

Neat snake. I like the "sunspots". There's go to be a cathy name out there for a Rainbow Boa with sun spots. Does her sister have them too?

Mike,
...Her sister is in these two PICs. She has the sunspots on her sides and several of them are extended for several inches along the sides. She is more strangely marked but not as brightly colored.

Jeff,
I have the other sister from that same litter and she looks like the tanner one with a highly abberant pattern. She has always been a picky eater, with the exception of this year. She is a little more than five feet and will be ready to breed this season. I'll keep my fingers crossed...........

Joe,
...I know where one other female from that litter is. I believe it looks like my brighter colored animal. I think I remember that all the aberrant looking animals in the litter were females. My two females and yours and the other one have all been poor feeders for much of their lives. Hopefully we can get at least one of them to lay some live babies next year.
