Feeding object questions

gopherlover Aug 05, 2003 12:22 PM

Well I havent really been postin here in a while and all well with my sd gopher. I have been feeding it about 3 mice about every 8 days or so. That seems to be ok but my snake is acuratky measured at 5'1" so that seems a bit skimpy for his size and a bit costly. I was wondering about switching to rats since they are larger and it only takes one. So here are my questions:

What size rat? Medium? Common? Large(dont think so)?

Will my snake redily accept this rat? He is wild caught and there are rats in this area that are wild.

What it the easiest way to dispatch the rat before putting it in with my snake?
Thanx,
Gopherlover

at the rats and find the size that is about equal to 3 mice. I would say small to med range should work. You will see a much better growth rate when you switch to rats also.

I have bought a rat and killed it. Now i put it in the cage and the snake strangled it like normal. but once done it looked for the head and gave up after a short search and now is not even attempting to feed. it just hisses when i move the rat around. it has been 11 days since i last fed it

Freeze the rat and try again in a couple days. It may take a few tries to get it.

Like Del said, freeze that rat and try it later. In the meantime, you might try a large rat pup or two. Maybe your snake was intimidated by the size of the rat you gave it. Start out a little smaller and work your way up.
