White headed Box turtle

yesimhavingfun Sep 15, 2006 07:40 PM

Hello all,
I'm not a usual poster here but had a question. I live in Tallahassee Fl. and recently I found an adult male gulf coast box turtle in the road, not unusual here, but his head is white. Its not solid white, it is more like a pattern between paper white and black, like army camo. I have never heard of this and was wondering if any of you have. The white is only on his head and neck; the rest of the turtle appears normal. Any help will be appreciated.

From what I've read about Gulf Coast box turtles, the white head is not that unusual.

Can you point me out to some readings? I am curious as to if it is age related, locale related or just a normal occurrence. I do a fair bit of herping and have come across a bunch of these animals and have never seen this characteristic. I hope to post a pic soon too. Thanks for any info.

"North American Box Turtles A Natural History" by C. Kenneth Dodd, Jr.

"Turtles of the United States and Canada" by Carl H. Ernst, Jeffrey E. Lovich, and Roger W. Barbour

Both would be good places to start.
