Plants for Chucks

dvl Sep 16, 2006 01:25 PM

I forgot to address the Esparanza question below. As far as I know, no harm has ever happened to chucks eating these flowers. Tacoma stans / Yellow Bells/ Esparanza. They are kin to the Catalpa tree, Campsis ( Trumpet vine ). My chucks will eat Esparanza but do not prefer it. They also nibble on things like Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush and dang near all those daisy/ sunflower type plants-- some they prefer to munch on the leaves over the flowers. I have groundcover fron Hell that they like the flowers --Wedelia. Another good Texas plant is Anisicanthus wrightii. Small red tubular flowers that love texas sun-- chucks & DI's will climb em to get to the flowers. Ruella is also eaten.

More later as I think of em!

below is the list from earlier post---

Common Ragweed -- they eat on the leaves,

Prostrate Euphorbias ( that reddish flat weed that grows in every sidewalk crack with white sap)and all similar weedy euphorbias-- same thing-- they eat leaves & all

Palafoxia - lizards seldom eat the leaves but love the purple flowers. A favorite!
Gaillardia-- tough & common wildflower. Leaves & flowers both eate--great chuck plant !
Calylophus--another great tough wild one that gets flowers & leaves eaten.
Indigofera miniata-- a great little creeping plant with small red flowers. They wallow in it with love!Flowers & leaves
Dalea--- flowers & leaves
Epazote (Chenopodium ambrosioides)nasty pungent weedy plant used to flavor beans in mexico--chucks love it. Almost a ragweed!
Scutellaria -- or Skullcap-- mainly the small flowers.
Lepidium-- weedy ol Peppergrass--they love all of it.
Erodium -- Storksbill/ Fillaree
Phacelia
Mallows/ Sida---- almost anything in this family works!
Palo Verde flowers---I break off limbs full of flowers & let em eat!
Mirbalis - the Four O'Clock family.
Verbena
Bladderpods-Lesquerella

I just tossed some Esparanza flowers in the pen & they tore em up. I guess my earlier observations were not all that complete. My plant is small so I have not tossed that many flowers in. When I did matbe they were already full or just in a grouchy mood that day!

What a horrible response to you DVL, I must have had my hands on the keyboard wrong or something, apologize for the horrible spelling response, I was in a rush and just typed it and ran out bvut didn't even look at the words; basically I was telling you how much I appreciate your expertise and was thanking you for the insight to the esparanzas and I will research some of the other plants you've recommended. I belive a healthy chuck is one that gets flowers from time to time....

I don't usually read the forum, just happened across the thread... I kept chuckwallas in Indiana, here're some plants I'd feed them that you didn't list; I was mostly feeding them the flowers:

Oenothera spp. (evening primrose)
Helianthus spp. (sunflower)
Taraxacum officinale (dandelion)
Cichorium intybus (chicory)
Robinia pseudoacacia (black locust)
Cercis canadensis (redbud)
Viola spp. (violets)
Coronilla varia
Rosa spp. (roses)
Impatiens spp. (impatiens; touch-me-not; jewelweed)

And, generally, they seem to like just about anything in the amaranth/goosefoot family (Amaranthaceae, sometimes goosefoots listed separately as Chenopodiaceae; all edible), mustard family (Brassicaceae; all edible), sunflower family (Asteraceae; few toxic members, & they don't eat Solidago), or bean family (Fabaceae; some toxic members).

I enjoy all this talk of Texas flora. Does anyone by chance know of a seed source for a Texas wildflower Sabatia campestris?
