Sexing hatchling black rats?

Weekendherper Sep 16, 2006 05:58 PM

I'm planning to keep a pair from a clutch I'm hatching out right now. Is there a visual way to sex them? If not, does anyone have other advice?

There are two basic methods, probing or popping. Kathy love has posted vidios on her site on how to do this. They are free. She shows you how to sex a Corn Snake, a Red Rat Snake. It is the same for just about any Rat Snake, so it will work with your Black Rats. Since these are very young snakes, try the popping method. It should work well for you.

Probing and popping work but can be hard especially on a young snake. Males generally have more tale after the anal plate than females do. Male tails are generally longer while female tales are generally short and stubby.
