Small southern ringsnake

sinistersmilts Sep 17, 2006 01:38 PM

I had one of the captains at the prison I work for bring me a small ringsnake to work. He had it for 5 days in a small jar with very little water, when I got it I went home and setup a tank for it with paper towel inside and misted the tank really well. I put a small fake tree looking thing in the tank with he climbed from the start. Well he was drinking the water drops so I'm not to worried about tht but I do have other questions.

[I read on some caresheets that a mixture of peetmoss, worm dirt, and play sand is good. I really prefer natural substrate so wanted to know if this mix would work.

[I read also off of several sites that they will eat earthworms, some insects, and other reptiles. This little guy(girl)is about 6 inchs long im not sure what would be best to try and feed him(her).

Hi,

If you look through the old posts on this forum, you should see a lot of care info for ringnecks. As for your's, it would be a big help to know where you are, since the subspecies vary a lot by size and diet across the country. In PA they only take salamanders, in Kansas mainly worms, in AZ snakes, etc. My only initial thought is that while they need water, I and I think a few others on this forum have experience with them getting bad blisters if you keep them moist.

Cheers,
Billy

Sorry, somehow I missed that part completely. Southerns should take small frogs, maybe worms or small skinks (Dan and Mike correct me if I'm wrong). See below for some posts about the infamous Beefy.
