do I win for most escaped snakes?

mistysprouse Sep 17, 2006 09:46 PM

yes folks I went on vacation for 1 week and left my snake sitter in charge(has snake sat for me a number of times).

Well I come into the apartment and head for my crop of new babies to find that all the cages were open. I have the vision 1540 cage I think(holds 22, was holding 12 currently). guess he didn't push the tanks back far enough. He was last here Friday night.

Well almost my entire season(12)(100% het for albino) of babies was out, only two stayed in the cage. So that put 10 baby snakes some were only about 2 weeks old don't even have pictures of yet. So can you see me crying yet? My snake sitter came back over and helped me look as of this point all the newest(smallest) ones are back, and 3 of my 6 older ones are still not found. I haven't even checked to see what sexes are still missing yet.

in blankets, under the couch, under shoes, in broom closet are just a few of the hiding places. I think one was in the bathroom(my medicine cabinet was trashed) and it could have went down the sink but I am not sure. Others could be under the stove in the kitchen or the fridge maybe?? I have tore my entire 900 sq foot apartment apart where else could they be?

so ya I am not having a good night, kind of hard to deal with when you have worked so hard to get those babies(almost 3 years of working two jobs to pay for all of this).

well back to searching I go, and next time no snake sitter. It isn't like they needed one just nice to give them fresh water and to spray them down since they were all shedding.

OUCH!!!

Well, you made me feel better about my situation. I walked into the snake room this morning, and my alcohol spray bottle was on the floor. I had visitors last night, so I didn't think much of it. Just picked it up and put it back on top of the rack. Left the room for a few minutes. When I came back, my note pad was on the floor. Uh oh! I think I have a snake on the loose! I started checking through all the enclosures (about 40), and came to an empty one that shouldn't have been empty. My son's little spider female was on the run! To make matters worse, this is a snake that hasn't been eating, and is due for another tube feed. I searched the tops of the racks first, since I knew she had been up there. Nope. Pulled all the tubs and looked in and behind. Nope. Two of my racks are on wheels, and one isn't. I pulled the two on wheels out. Still no snake. Well, I figured under the third rack was a likely hiding spot, so I very carefully started working it out from the wall. Tilted it up, and sure enough, there was Charlotte. Couldn't reach her while holding up the rack, so I grabbed a hook, and then was able to get her out. Moved her to a more secure tub!

Wow, I just happened to think, I should have put a hopper mouse under there with her. Either she would have eaten for the first time on her own, or come runnin' out of there!

I once had a 1500 gram male escape...
didn't even notice until I went to bed.

Stuck my hand under the pillow and felt something cold and scaly...

There he was, curled up under my pillow. It was like the snake fairy had dropped him off. Haha.

Good luck finding the babies.

I got up in the middle of the night a few months ago. Walked past my dresser, and heard some papers rustle. I figured I just brushed against something, and didn't pay any attention. As I was stumbling past on my way back to bed, the papers rustled again. This time I turned the light on, and there was a 750 gram female, coiled and daring me to return her to her enclosure. I did, and went back to bed. Couldn't sleep. Got back up to check, and she was half way out again. I spent the next 1/2 hour or so moving all the snakes out of my "makeshift" rack.

I am sitting here reading these escape stories when I realize one of my baby balls is sitting on the books stacked up to my right. Misty I'm crediting you with this catch because if I hadn't decided to take five and read your post I wouldn't have noticed him there.LOL Best of luck on your hunt.
