my first childrens.........

adamjeffery Sep 17, 2006 10:29 PM

well i went to the local show here in buffalo and happened to find a nice couple who breed childrens pythons and the had some hatchlings as well as some yearlings. so when i finally decided to go back and get them they had already sold the 1.1 yearlings and had .1 yearlings and 0.0.2 hatchlings left.
i asked them if i could possibly pop them and they said that it was fine and they turnrd out to be both female. so instead i just bought the yearling female and figure ill just get a male later on maybe in the spring or possibly sooner if the deal is right.
well here are some newly taken pics.

Nice snake! I like the ones with golden eyes.

Wow! You're either brave or lucky or both. No way in hell I'd let my Children's do that when I first got her. She'd have bitten me in the face. Cool pix.

well actually the breeder i got her from is a small time breeder and they handle all of their snakes regularly and this one is dog tame. she did get a little snippy when first removing her from the deli cup after a bumpy 1 1/2 hour ride home. but she snapped only once and calmed down instantly after being out for a minute.
now i am starting the search for a male of the same age or length. this girl is a june 05 hatch and already 22 inches long which is kind of impressive to me. i thought they would be a slow grower. shell probaly breed next season if i have a male to breed her to.

Glad to see you're enjoying your new family member. The little ones do get a bit nippy when you go into their enclosure at first, probably in hopes that you're dinner. But they've all been pretty calm and easy to handle. Our mom and dad are very peaceful snakes. Perhaps it's genetic.

Not sure if you got 2 or 6 from the 2005 batches but these are the baby pics - should be able to tell which is which from the spot patterns on their heads! I'm pretty sure that 2007 will be a bit early to breed but you could always give it a shot.

well it was number 6 that i got from ya because i remeber you saying goodbye to her when i paid for her. she is a beutiful little girl. i have found some boys for her that are the same age but i need to get a liitle money together first. they are a little more expensive at this other place (plus ill have to pay shipping) i dont plan on breeding her unless she is at least 30 inches. shes only 22 inches appx right now. im glad to see you on here. and while i have you.....
is their a good weight approximation that i should strive for prior to attempting to allow her to mate?
thanks again and great site.

The recommendations I've seen are as follows - males should be at least 1.5 years old and females 2.5 years old. They should be fed well prior to attempting to breed. I keep mine together year round so they just hook up when the mood strikes them. Hence the March clutch this year and the June one last!

I was at the same show in Buffalo - but by the time I got around to the Children's, there were only the two hatchlings left. Cute buggers! I almost left with one, they are so cool as adults, but the husband dragged me away. Great looking snake!
