u ocellata hatchling!

esoteric Sep 17, 2006 10:50 PM

After two years of trying I'm now officially a grand-dad. I had a random inclination to check the incubator tonight between puttign down my physics book and picking up calculus and spied something a little abnormal- my last surviving egg of the season had magically transformed into a perfectly sweet little spotted monster.

The clutch was laid on July 2 and "he" hatched sometime this week, so just about a 75 day incubation period. Total weight, about 5g. The lineage is Brittany X EvilBastard, so this one is looking like an EvilBastard Jr. to me. This is a Sudanese Uromastyx, uromastyx ocellata ocellata.

Way to go, Esoteric! Even one is a win. Our Sudan kept her eggs so long tis year that we finally decided she was just overweight & pulled the nesting box. The rest is history...

Yeah, none of my females have been using nest boxes when provided (probably the majority of my problem incubating) so they're going to be isolated in next season once they start "rounding out". Dealing with these small species they don't necessarily get real big when gravid if they otherwise eat well. Of course the mother, Brittany, got her name due to that whole "just fat?" or "pregnant?" controversy in the media last year with her namesake.

For what it's worth, IMHP, if the female looks pregnant & continually checks out the nesting box, she IS pregnant. We won't make the same mistake next year. Palpation, grrrr...
Keep us posted on your kid's progress!

You can't judge evil by appearances alone. Have you ever met jeune/Vonnie?
