Finally hatched

toppy Sep 18, 2006 09:54 AM

I had a female honduran that laid 6 eggs on June 1st.... she had 2 eggs stuck in her and after waiting a week and setting up a vet appointment - she died the next morning. So after being depressed about that I turned my attention to the 6 eggs. 2 went bad ( opaque / rock hard after 8 weeks ) but the other 4 looked good. They finally piped Friday for a total of 107 days of incubation.

I have 3 healthy babies and one under developed baby. The healthy ones are
1 tricolor pos het for antheristic.
1 Tangerine pos het for antheristic.
1 Antheristic honduran baby.

Last year I got 2 of each - pretty lucky clutch.

The under developed baby is a tricolor and it is 1/2 the size of the others and has an enlarged and slightly twisted area just in front of the clocia. It looks like it ate a pinky and it is in that area however it has never fed. So far the other 3 have eaten a F/T pinky within 3 days of full hatch but the last one has not eaten. All the babies are in blue ( starting a shed cycle) except for the small one.

anyone have babies with abnormalities that survive???

I will post pics soon.

Thanks
Chris

Well not exactly. I tried opening an egg last week that was all shriveled up only to find an awesome underdeveloped ghost looking at me. I gently closed the egg and I'm keeping it moist. Some of us have to learn the hard way to leave them alone!

question!

OK, well how long do you wait until slitting an egg?

Here's my dilemma...out of 5 eggs, only three eggs were fertile, the first one started piping on Sunday (09-17) and was out of the egg by Tuesday morning (09-19).

The eggs were laid on July 4th, and incubated @ 79 - 82 degrees F. Today makes the 78th day...

When should I make a slit...or do I just wait it out?

I've never had a health snake not slit its own egg, so should I just let nature take its course?

I need some helpful feed back before I do something stupid.

I would leave it alone for a while. 3 of my eggs finally piped. The last egg that did not pip sat for 2 days then while i was out of town my wife slit it. it had a baby tricolor in it 1/2 the normal size but with an under developed clocia. It definetly will not survive. I would let nature decide. If the baby developes - then let it hatch. if it does not pip - it may not have developed correctly in the 1st place and most likely will not make it if you slit the egg. There is always a small chance
that the baby cannot pip on its own and this may be the only reason that slitting could be a positive thing.

Just my thoughts

Thanks
Chris
