Last night was a truely eventful night for me as far as my herping goes. I try to handle one of my 4 snakes nightly, to ensure they all get held 2 times or so a week.
Well, last night my favorite of the group shed, an extremely well colored orange brazlian. I have him with me and head to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth. I put him on the ground, fully confident that I know my house and that there are no holes or anywhere for him to get to.
So I was wrong! He found a hole underneath the cabinet fixture in the bathroom! I was mortified! At midnight, there's nowhere I can think of to get a live mouse and set a trap. What was worse, was that I was completely unsure if he had access to the walls, etc. I ran down for the tool kit to start taking apart the bathroom when suddenly it hit me - "what if he is hiding and is trapped in the walls with no escape?"
Enter Steve Irwin crossed with McGyver. I know that my snakes don't like the light and they sure as heck hate vibrations. I tied a piece of string to a small flashlight and threw it in the hole. Seconds afterwards, the base to my razor - a vibrating Mach 3 went in behind it. I turned off every light in the house and could hear that razor handle going off. I knew if the snake had no other way out, he'd come back for sure.
I set his hide with some plants just outside the hole and in 20 minutes I was reunited with him! Boy was he mad... he snapped like crazy - his way of telling me "What the heck did you do that for?".
Well, he's calmed back down. I still am yet to be bitten by any of my snakes to date.
Moral of the story: Snakes are sneaky buggers! Keep an eye on them at all times!
Sorry it was so long... but it was an eventful night for me!
