Hello,
My name is Eric and I have become fascinated with Cyclura
and Ctenosaura. I am hoping to acquire one of these wonderful animals sometime in the near future!
For now I will be doing my homework and lurking around to read
and obtain as much info as possible. I have had everything from
a green iggy, jackson's, sav & black throat monitors and currently own 1.1.0 argentine B/W tegus and 0.0.1 red tegu.
In my 12 years of keeping reptiles cyclura and tegus have intrigued me the most.
I am guessing fall is hatching season for most cyclura, etc.?
Sooner or later I will be looking to purchase a hatchling or young juvie. I just need to decide what kind!

Thanks, Eric

Oh, this also seems like a very friendly and helpful forum!

Good choices, Cyclura, Ctenosaura, and Tegus!! All 3 are favs of mine too. A Rhino was my first Cyclura, then came lewisi hybrids and Cubans. The Rhinos are still my favorite.

Thanks for the warm welcome!
There are many beautiful animal pix posted here and I am envious!
Right now I would only have room/time for 1 more lizard. I am torn between a rhino or blue cayman. It sounds like either one would make a great pet. I would prefer a hatchling so I know it's history and can work with it from day 1. However, the local pet store took in a 1 1/2 year old rhino. He looks a little stressed (dark) and has a stubby tail. He is about 18", supposedly tame but that is all they know about him. At least they think it's a male. From what I can tell he is healthy and they only want $125 for him. I feel like I need to "save" him because of course the young workers at the store really don't know what his requirements are, etc. I have given them info and a few websites to research so hopefully that will help.
That being said, I am at a fork in the road...
Any sugestions or thoughts are welcome and appreciated!

Thanks, E

Considering that I've been doing rescue for 10 years I'm all for giving a needy animal a good home. Rhinos can tame very easily, even as adults. I acquired 2 adult males when the Long Island Reptile Museum was shut down and both were wild and unaccustomed to handling (scared to death). They were ready to bite coming out of the bags!! Within 3 months I was handfeeding them and petting and within 6 months they were being held quite easily. Personally, I'd rather work with an animal that is a little older rather than a hatchling.

That's what I have decided. I pick him up tonight!
I looked him over again last night and aside from his dark color and stubby tail he looks and appears to be in good shape.
He (I think) has all toes & nails, his mandible and bones
felt solid. Eyes looked clear and clean along with his vent area. He is flighty but I am hopeful with time and patience he'll settle in and make a great pet.
I will post some pix when I can so all of you can try to determine it's gender. Talk to you soon!

Thanks, E
