Enclosure construction question

simias Sep 19, 2006 04:35 PM

I have a group of large leopard torts outside in southern California and want to build a small wading pond for them. I'd like to just make a shallow 6x8 foot cement lined pond wiith a sloping entrance - can I just dig a shallow hole, put in some wire supports, and then pour cement ? Seems like baby wading pools are too deep, and most other prefab options don't work well with tortoises that need to have easy access and very shallow water. Thought I would either make a drain in the middle, or use a small sump pump for keeping it clean.

Any advice ?

I had a friend in Rowlett, TX that just dug a simple 4' x 4' hole at the top of a sloping point in his yard. He dug a small trench leading out to the low end and put piece of garden hose in it, then buried the hose.

He took some quick crete and lined the hole making sure not to cover up the opening to the hose. Once it dried he had a nice pond and kept the hose plugged up until he wanted to drain it.

i just had an idea for drain ,flush mount to lowest (deep end)point then run pipe to outside pen and 90 degree it sky ward for a stand pipe no glue! and to clean or drain just pull the stand pipe fitting off and drain into hole outside pen. Voila!
