What would you do?...

SnakeSmith Sep 19, 2006 07:53 PM

I have three females in the 2000-2500 gram range, a pastel male and a het. pied male. I've had them all since they were hatchlings (very healthy and solid animals).
The question is...would you breed the het. pied male or the pastel to the females? This will be my first year having females big enough to breed though I don't know if I would be better off producing 50% het. pieds and keeping all females, or pastels and keeping all the females.
Thanks,
Glenn

On a more serious note I would breed the Het Pied to 2 and the Pastel to one assuming they are both aggressive breeders. If not they may make the decision for you. Vinnie

Hey Vinnie,
Thanks for your repy, "For a Klondike bar"! I should have saw that coming. Ha, ha. But I agree, go for some of both if they are willing.

It depends on what your goals are.

Assuming that you have nice looking females - I would breed them all to the pastel - sell all the offspring as well as the het male and buy yourself pied to work with

Of course if you have dark girls it might be best not to try pastels.

Hey Tosha,
Dark girls=Bad? Sorry I'm not sure UI know what you mean? Do lighter girls produce better looking pastels?
Thanks,
Glenn

Although it's not always the case - generally darker girls will throw orangey pastels which brown out to ugly pastels. This isn't set in stone and there are always instances where this hasn't happened but it's generally best to breed pastels to lighter color girls.

Hope this helps.

I would breed the pastel to 2 of them and the het pied to 1. Sell the pastel offspring(I would probably keep 1 female pastel)and buy a male pied. Then you will also have some Poss. het females to raise up for your pied male. This is assuming all of your females produce.

I appreciate your replies! It appears that hatching pastels to aquire visual recessives is popular in this case. Sounds good and thanks again!
