Is my snake okay?

burton560 Sep 19, 2006 09:42 PM

Today I picked up my new ball python and I noticed she has a grey blotch in her nose, in one of the the labial openings. To see what I'm talking about, look at this picture - http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i103/burton560/S4010059.jpg

I have only owned her for less than a 3 weeks now. She was captive bred from a local trusty petstore. Shes only like 16 inches long.

Is my snake okay or should I be worried?

If it matters much, she just left a big neon yellow turd on my girlfriend's lap!

Could be a tick in her heat pit.....not sure about the yellow turd. I would get to a vet ASAP for that and have a fecal done. From what I hear most BP's from pet stores are CH or WC.

One of my new professors here on campus is a herpetologist. Hopefully I'll show him my ball python on Thursday and he can recommend something.

I agree, it certainly looks a lot like a tick to me. You probably should check over the whole body for more, and look for mites also. She very well could be a WC or CH, or they could have gotten in other snakes that were WC and passed ticks onto the other snakes in their care. I would definitely check her out and take appropriate steps if she has ticks/mites.
Good luck.

Must admit It looks like a ticks ass when you blow the picture up. As for the Yellow poo, not a sign of any healthy snake that I have heard of. If it was mine I would get her to vets a.s.a.f.p. If it is a tick in her heat pit it will only get bigger and cause her more grief until it has eaten it's fill and then drops off and you have the fun of finding the little blood sucker. Either way I would do a full spring clean of her habitat/box/cage and stuff.

Hope that things go well for you and your snake.

The yellow poop sounds like urates to me - my snakes, along with the snakes I work with, spew yellow poop every so often, along with white and a ton of clear stuff. I dono about the "huge" part, but a bunch of white/yellow poopy lookin stuff along with funky liquid is normal.
If it's a big, dog poop-shaped turd that's yellow though, that doesn't sound like anything I've seen.

For those of you who said it was a mite, well......you are correct!

I took matters into my own hands to find out what the "lump" is, so I took out my handy tweezers out of my disection kit, gently held my snake, and the mite came right out. The mite is a lightish grey, I know the picture doesnt help much. I'm still gonna show her to my college's herpetologist tommorrow!
