What ssp of Ringneck is pictured at the top right of the Terrestrial Snakse Forum? Is that a Northern?

Hi Diego. I believe it is a northern. Check out that clean yellow belly with no spots and that complete neck ring. They are really gorgeous little snakes in person.

Billy,

Thanks for the reply. When you say complete ring, do you mean it goes all the way around the body?

I got a couple of little rings the other day, and I'm thinking their Northerns. Look just like the little feller in that picture.

Now for the predictable question: What should I feed them? I tried earthworms, and they just stared at me as if to ask "What do we do with these?"

Yep, the ring goes completely around the neck.

Some northerns have been recorded taking worms, but most are salamander feeders. I've only tried to keep one, but it only took salamanders and turned down guppies, worms, and tadpoles.

Mike's got more experience with these guys than I do, but salamanders seem to be it.

Cheers,
Billy

Alot of what Billy said was on target...

I've kept a very high number of northern ringneck snakes, babies... adults... inbetween...

When they are first caught, if you want them feeding, give them salamanders. I have had northerns take f/t salamanders from my fingers THE DAY they were caught. On the other hand, I have only had 1 northern ringneck take a worm the day it was caught.

They will take worms, but they need to adjust to captivity first... Usually it will take a month before they'll eat worms. And I've had them go a whole year ignoring worms but eating other things like salamanders and even mice.

They will also take fish. I saw this first hand, and Will Still had an albino northern baby on guppies. I assume they think a flopping fish resembles a salamander? Atleast that is the consensus. Some specimens will also take small snakes, but I have 1) usually only juvenile females will and 2) they have to be newborn snakes, I have had them refuse a snake that was more than 5 weeks old... I guess they lose that "newborn smell" and start to smell like they can fight back.

Message in point. Salamanders.

...could you guys post some pics of their neck rings from below? I don't know if the ones I have qualify as complete rings.

P.S.

I left some worms in a dish in their cage overnight, and they're gone. Don't know if they got eaten or crawled out. Gonna go check.

Thanks,

Technically they don't have 'complete' rings. The ring does not extend around the ventral area of the neck.

...they are indeed eating worms. Now, living in Arizona, where can I find Salamanders and tiny frogs to supplement their diet? Anybody sell em' frozen, matbe?

...a buddy of mine works in a pet shop out here and I scored them through him. They don't really look like our native Diadophis. They lack the bright orange/red ventral coloration that ours have, which led me to search for what kind they might be. Of course, I don't know if there's a lot of color variations within our state's population...
