What kind of panther is this?

alexroque Sep 20, 2006 05:36 PM

They had this guy for sale at a local pet shop for $200. He was probably 14".

Does anyone know what type of panther he is? Ambilobe? Sambava? Nosy Be?

Is $200 a good price?

Thanks for your help

Maybe these two sites will help...

It's hard to tell without him being fired up but if I had to take a stab just by that pic I would say he is an ambilobe. $200 is not a bad price for a boy his size...as long as he is healthy, which may not be the case because pet store conditions can be very stressful.

I thought Ambilobes displayed more orange and reds and yellows. Does this mean this guy could change into other Bolder colors like reds, orange, yellows? he looked very healthy.

For as long as you can. It looks in the picture like he is closing one eye. Eye closure especially of one eye can be a very bad sign and can be a sign of organ damage. Especially kidneys. Sometimes it can signal some kind of infection especially in the mouth or head area. Go watch him for a time and make sure he does not close one or both eyes for any length of time during the day. A healthy cham does not keep their eyes closed for any length of time during the day. If you see one eye close and slightly sink in a bit like the one eye went to sleep it is a bad sign. Also ask them to feed him for you so you can make sure he is eating. Ask lots of questions about how they provide water and supplementation. good luck.

Anson,

Thanks for your valuable input. Now, that I think about it, his right eye was closed the whole time. I thought it was natural since my beardie does it from time to time. Wow, thank you for this bit of expertise. I would have spent hundreds of dollars on a sick cham and even more w/ vet visits and medications. Hopefully, I can find a decent panther at a decent price at the herp expo this weekend!

you can't be too careful. Sometimes saving $50 - $100 initially can lead to big problems later on. Including many more hundreds at a vet not to mention the heartache of losing a beloved pet and trust me you get really attached to them. Try to find a good reputable breeder. Herp expos can have good and bad guys at them too. I would lurk around on this site. Read all the posts for a while. Ask others to post who they have had a good experience with. Sometimes it's worth spending the shipping $$
A good breeder should know how to ship their chams safely.
Some good ones I like are Cham Paradise, Bluebeast, Kammerflage, but post the question on this site and see who else because I have been absent for about a year so there may be some new breeders that are really good.
Feenie, Lele and Carlton really know their stuff so they may have some good imput for you.
I used to breed but due to some personal difficulties am chamless at the moment but hopefully not for long since this is the first time since 1998 that I don't own one.
I will hopefully be getting one soon though.
Also post asking for a good detailed care sheet. I used to have one when i sold chams but am not at my usual computer. If anyone that bought one of my chams has my old care sheet they are welcome to e-mail it to you. My reason for writing it is to make sure my chams got good care and that new owners would not have to go through heartache because once a cham is really sick it is hard to get them back on track. Especially with organ damage.
Feenie got stitch from me years ago and just look at him, so my care sheet is hopefully helping out. He also could not have asked for a better mommie!

He is the same color as my male ambilobe. My male when he is sleeping changes into the red and orange colors. I will have to agree about the eyes . He should be more alert.
