I have probed two or three Gonyosoma (Elaphe) frenata. I don't recall subcaudal depths but I can tell you they are very easy to probe and the results are quite obvious.

Current snakes:
0.0.1 Gonyosoma oxycephala - Java locale (green)
1.2 Gonyosoma oxycephala - Jave local (green)
2.2 Gonyosoma janseni - Seleyar locale (all black)
1.2 Gonyosoma janseni - Celebes locale (Black & Tan)
Can you give me an estimate? The store only has one individual so I can't do a comparision. I keep mainly kings and the tail on this rat is alot longer than a kingsnakes. I do keep subocs and had a female probe about 7 subcaudals, which suprised me because female kings usually probe around 4.
I hate to throw out numbers, but going by other species of Gonyosoma I'd say females are less than 4 subcaudals and the probe will likely feel a bit loose against the sides.
I have never "bottomed out" a probe on a male Gonyosoma but they go quite deep with a much tighter feel.
Sorry to not be more specific. Gonyosoma oxycephala show a certain degree of dimorphism in their heads and tails so I have always used probing as a last step to confirm gender.
I realize this is a different species and that you don't have multiple specimens for comparison. But I'm also guessing that when you probe it you'll know.

Ok thank you. That's great info.
I had a male frenata for a short time(he escaped). He was bought as a male,so I never probed it.If you get one of these guys be really careful about escape proofing his enclosure.Mine was an escape artist like I've never seen before. jeff
