Quick heating question.

Mark_D Sep 21, 2006 03:57 AM

Hey Guys,

I just aquired my first Burm yesterday, I didnt get the Albino hatchling in the end, I ended up with a lovely bright colored Normal Burm, about 10 months old. He is het for Albino and Leopard. Fell in love at first sight
Just a quick question regarding heating.
What temp do you guys keep your burms at day and night? And what heat source do you use?
I'm building my new burm a new Viv and want to set up the best heating set-up.
At the moment I use a reptile spot lamp connected to a pulse stat and am getting a day temp of 92 in the hot zone and 80 at the cool end.
I drop the temp down a few degrees at night so the hot spot is around 84 is this ok?
This isnt perfect as there is still a small glow from the bulb, so I want to use some other for of heating at night.
Should I use a red night bulb or heat mat?
I'm not sure the mat will heat the viv enough and I never like installing mats directly inside the viv... Always worry about burning.

Any advice would be great,

Cheers

Mark

Forgot to add i live in the UK, so day and night temps in the house are lower than in the USA.
Its about 65 - 70 in the house on a winters night.

Since you live in the UK, you might opt for the Pearlco Ceramic Heat Emitter; they come in a variety of wattages and are very versatile (and since they don't emit light, they can be kept on continuously which is going to be important with your cooler temperatures in your house). If Pro Products ships their radiant heat panels, they are by far and away the finest heat source out there; I use them for many different herps including burms. The temps you mentioned in terms of what you are shooting for sound good.

Now I often post on here and I try to stay up on all the morphs but isn't the leapord Burm just the name given to snakes that are homo for both granite and green. If so a snake that is het for leapord would actually be het for granite and green. IF someone could clarify this for me I would be greatly appreciated. Todd
