Well, it looked as if it would be the last decent night of the season and, even though it was late in the year, I headed down 277 last night. I did some walking in Edwards county before sunset, didn't see a thing, not even a lizards.
at dusk I stared working my way south from the edwards/val verde county line. Temperature at 8PM was around 82F, barometer 29.83. At 10PM temps were still around 76, barometer 29.95 rising. I worked my way down to Carruthers, then started working my way back north. Around 11:15 I had finished the cuts between Mail Trail and Buffalo Creek and decided to head on home.
What I saw was 1 young scolopendra, 3-4 young millipedes, 1 racoon, 6-7 ringtails, scores of piles of ringtail feces. What I didn't see was deer, rabbits, lizards, snakes, skunks, owls or anything else not mentioned above. I saw NO fresh roadkill on the way down, only one buzzard on a trip that usually finds dozens of buzzards. No juvenile bullsnakes, no nothing.
I hit Sonora a bit after midnight and the temps were still 70-71. I backroaded it through Sutton, Schleicher, Runnels couunties on the way home. I finally saw some deer and a few rabbits.
Fortunately gasoline is down to $2.169 in Abilene so it didn't hurt too badly - 475 miles of driving. I had topped off in Sonora on the way down - $2.379
