Panacur Dosage?

phiber_optikx Sep 21, 2006 04:33 PM

OK, so I got the panacur in the mail today (thanks LLL) So.... how much do I give her? She is 4'7" and I have no accurate idea as to what she weighs... maybe 1 pound? Can anyone tell me about how much to give? And also, just administer it orally with no water or anything else? Do I make her swallow it or just make sure it is in her mouth towards her throat? Thanks in advance!

I can't remember the ballpark dosage amounts that I've used in the past, but I always injected Panacur into a feeder animal to reduce stress.

Here is a site with the info you are looking for. You need to get the true weight of your snake before you give it to him. Don't guess at it.
Panacur Dosage

Some older literature suggests Panacur (fenbendazole) dosage at 25 mg per kg, but most newer info says 50 to 100 mg per kg. (23-46 ml(cc) per lb. 100 mg = 1 ml = 1 cc (roughly). I agree with Shane about giving it orally, stressing the snake. I inject meds into f/t feeder rodents, too. You can probably get some 1 cc syringes from your local vet if you tell them what it's for. I have had a hard time getting panacur paste through a needle and usually use the syringe without it and pump the stuff into the rodent's mouth. If you don't know the weight of your snake, it is best to err on the low side. Digital scales for food weighing are not that expensive and are a valuable tool.

Scratch that... Don't err on the low side.. bad advice. Get a correct weight before administering any drug. -Toby

One other precaution, depending on where you get it from...

Petsmart sells it in a 5 gram package, but it only has 1.2 grams of Fenbendazole in each packet.

Read the package carefully.

I have a digital food scale that I picked up at walmart for like $20. It reads grams in increaments of 2, but that is fine for what you will need.
