Baby BRBs

Jeff Clark Sep 22, 2006 02:03 AM

This litter was born between midnight and 1AM this morning. They were all delivered inside a plastic storage box with wet ground cocoanut husk in the box. They had all been delivered and were just beginning to leave their membranes when I discovered them. The mother was born here in 1999 and this is her third litter. She weighed just over 6 pounds a couple months ago and has looked ready to lay for some time. There were 20 healthy babies and one large slug when I found them. The mother was nosing through the pile of babies like they often do and may have eaten other slugs out of the litter. The babies are all about the same size and I weighed 6 of them that were all 34 to 36 grams. Most of the snakes in this litter are more colorful than those in other litters born over the last 5 weeks.

These next PICs show pretty good detail of the blood vessels inside the membranes.

This last PIC is one of the other females that should deliver in the next week or two.
