Another feeding question.

jasonguy Sep 22, 2006 06:46 PM

I got a baby okeetee the last saturday at the local reptile show here. Hes a spunky little guy that likes to roam around and check out his enclosure and seems very alert and interested in whats going on. I put him in a very quiet room that only sees activity for about 10 minutes a day. The breeder I bought him from said he had shed and been fed once. I left him alone for around 72 hours when I brought him home and tried to feed him a small F/T pinkie he showed no interest. I covered his enclosure with a blanket and placed him in a small deli cup with the pinkie over night still nothing. I tossed the pinkie and left him alone for another 48 or so hours and tried to feed him another F/T pinkie still nothin. He didnt have a bulge when i got him and he hasnt defecated since ive had him.

So heres the question. Is this normal? How long should it take before I become concerned? I am used to reptiles having an acclimation period, whats the typical length of time for a small corn? Ive read the many threads on feeding and have written down the tips. I guess what Im really looking for is some kind of a "typical timeline" for acclimation and feeding.

Thanks as always,
Jason

Any new snake I receive, I give them five to seven days before I handle or feed them. Some folks may feed sooner, but I belive at the very least give a new snake several days to relax and adjust to it's new enclosure before offering food.

Everyone else gave you great pointers. I just want to add an opinion of mine. There is occasionally a "list" of tricks to perform to get hatchlings to eat. The last thing on the list is always live. I really don't understand why this is. I try live after the 2nd missed meal. If it will take live what is the problem? Your first concern should be to get the snake to eat. Your second concern should be switching over. Just my thoughts.

After trying the above mentioned things, try braining them. Cutting a small hole in the head area to get them smelling good. If the F/T pinks that you are getting are too big, try cutting them in half long ways then warming them up.
