Panacur (more...)

phiber_optikx Sep 22, 2006 07:08 PM

Ok so I got her weighed. She weighs 2.6 pounds. I am not being lazy (for once) can somebody please tell me the correct dosage of panacur to give her? Thanks in advance!

Well 2.6 pounds is equal to 1179 grams or 1.179kg. If you wanted to give 100mg/kg then you would need 117.9mg of panacur. Now you need to know what the concentration of you panacur is. It should say on the box somewhere.

If it were let's say 50mg/ml, then you would need 2.358ml of the panacur. If it's 100mg/ml then you would need 1.179ml.

What snake is it for? 1180 grams is big for a corn.

It is for my black rat Molly. The concentration is 100 mg/g. I still can't convert it on my own though.... I REALLY wish I paid more attention in math/science. Or I wish we would convert..... But there are people more stupid than I who would NEVER figure it out. I really appreciate everyones help with this. Molly says thanks too. I had one more question. Panacur is mostly effective against nematoads... what does this family encompass? What else should I treat for if anything? Thanks again for all of your help.

cause if she has something else wrong with her, the panacur is not going to help. Didn't someone else suggest a possibility of crypto?

It was mentioned in a previous post.

That would be 1.179g. You will need a way to measure this fairly accurately. So you would need a scale that measures /- 0.01g. I would still recomend a vet visit.

The dose for a reptile is 50 - 100 mg per Kg. Since your snake is about 1.2 KG in mass, you can give your snake 1 gram of 100mg/1gram concentration of product. That works out to giving the snake about 85mg per KG, a safe dose. Just dissolve 1 gram of product into the recomended amount of water, and inject that into your f/t mouse. Feed the mouse to the snake. Repeat in two weeks.

Before you do this, ask yourself: how sure are you that the snake has intestinal nematodes?

No, I don't know for a fact that she has nematoads.... but if you will click the link you will see the cause for my concern.

Im sure I will get flamed for this.My reptile vet trains other vets on reptile medicine/disease/injury etc.I was told even if I screwed up and did a double dosage it would not hurt my snakes. This was a powered form that was mixed with water. My vet also loads syringes for me with panacure that would treat a 2 to 4 pound snake.I also dose each new snake I purchase twice 5 days apart.I doubt your black rat has crytpo or it and your collection would be dead by now.Dont be afraid to use it.All WC have parasites of some kind.Go for it Phiber.I have faith in you brother.

If lead paint is so deadly why do they make it so delicious?

Not going to flame you, but... Crypto does not always kill that quickly. It can take up to two years for a snake to die from crypto. Yes, wc snakes all have something, more in some than others. It won't hurt to use the Panacur, but if it is something the Panacur does not treat, then it is doing nothing. Panacur is considered fairly safe, even at overdose levels, but overdoses have happened.

Thanks everyone for their replys. I just wanted to throw ina little disclaimer. I will be taking her to the vet. I just want to treat what I can by myself. There is no use giving the vet $40 if I can learn to do it on my own. I will still be taking her in for testing and was just hoping the panacur might help out a little.

If you are serious about the Vet.... Don't Panacur.
You could get a false negative reading.

Many of us old timers do some "quacking" on our own animals, since there was nothing for years, but I think most everyone here, and I agree, are advising you to go to a vet, since you're talking of only one animal.
