Anyone Out There With Heosemy Spinosa?

EMWhite Sep 23, 2006 01:19 AM

Hello all, I have maintained a pair of Heosemy spinosa (spiny turtles/ spiny hill turtles) for close to one year now, and I'm wondering if anyone else has experience keeping these turtles. Anyone care to share information or observations?

These guys are one of my favs of asian turtles ! I have 20 small ones that I to got about a year ago . All 20 are flawless and a vet and I started deworming them within a few weeks of recieving them . Since then they are one of my hardiest turtles ! You never see them as they bury in the mulch until you put the food out and they rise from the grave , much like Night Of The Living Dead ! Enjoy !!!

Regmon, wow that's a handfull o' turtles! I agree with you, they seem to be quite hardy. I have found them to be one of the most personable turtles I have worked with. I began hand feeding them some months ago and now they are so used to my hand=food that I have to keep a careful eye on my fingers! Do yours like banana? Mine cannot get enough of it. Also, how often do you feed yours earthworms (another favorite of theirs)/animal matter? Mine get them about twice a month ( /-).

Regards,

Yes , I feed mine banana on occassion but it's not the most nutritious valued fruit. Berries , mellons and a few others have alot higher nutrition value. Nightcrawlers are okay , just be careful on how they are being stored ( soil , etc in the container ) . An occassional pinkie mouse is relish as well ! I read in an article ( I apologize I don't recall ) to keep the protein low in juvies as adults can take alittle more although not as probably Heosemys grandis . Grandis are a whole nother turtle in themselves as they come chasing you down pecking at your toes !
