Pythonidae Hybrid List

Dread Sep 23, 2006 11:57 AM

I'm interested in compiling a list of all the Pythonidae hybrids so people know what is possible, to whom to give credit for the first viable crosses, when it happened, etc. I'm a relative newbie, so I'm sure there are people who have seen, handled and bred these hybrids, so I defer to the greater general knowledge on this. I think it's fabulous that herpers are experimenting with their diverse collections to create new and beautiful forms. And if "God" didn't want snake hybrids to exist, he'd have erected a species barrier like he did for most other vertebrates

Just a note, I'm not so interested in the sub-species crosses like the various carpet python crosses (though yes, they are beautiful too), I'm more interested in crosses that wouldn't exist in nature because the of the geographical limitations of the respective home ranges. Please add and correct this meager list I've started:

Python regius x P.anchietae -> viable cross
P.regius x P.breitensteini -> viable cross
P.reticulatus x P.molurus bivittatus -> viable cross
P.molurus bivittatus x P.sebae -> viable cross, albinism compatible!
P.regius x Aspidites ramsayi -> viable cross (NERD 2006)
Morelia spilota x A. ramsayi -> viable cross (NERD 2006)
M. spilota cheynei x Liasis mackloti mackloti -> viable cross (NERD 2006)
M. spilota cheynei x M. viridis
M. spilota cheynei x M. bredli

I'd personally love to see a L. mackloti mackloti x P. regius

You have compiled a very accurate list, you can add:
Python regius X Python curtus curtus (Ball Python X Sumatran Short Tail Python)
Also,
I believe that Kevin produced both Jungle & Coastal Carpet crosses with Macklots (Carplots & Junglots)

Chondros (M. viridis) have been crossed with Irian Jaya Carpets in addition to Jungles.

I don't know what you are referring to as albinism compatibility with the Rock X Burms, there was only Burmese amelanism used in that cross. To my knowledge there hasn't been a line of amelanistic sebae established yet.

Not pythons of course, but two boa hybrids that are interesting are Colombian X Yellow Anaconda & Rainbow X Haitian Boa.

Oh, that's even more interesting!
I would love to have a couple grand a DNA sequencer to take a look at the parents and progeny of that Rock x Burm cross!

Quick question: amelanism is recessive in all boids?

If the P. sebae was wild-type, and not het for amelanism, then in the hybridization process both P. molurus bivittatus alleles for amelanism were used (i.e. something very strange happened) in the amelanistic progeny.

I'll add your crosses to the list, thanks a lot! Interesting that Dread and Horrid(us) are discussing this

Oh wait, I've just read more of the details of that albino Burm x Rock.

The father was a 100% het albino Burm x Rock hybrid, bred to an albino labyrinth Burm mother. Both albino traits come from P. molurus bivittatus. That makes more sense!

I have seen this hybrid available for years and the albino ones are very watered down, mostly burmese genes, but yet remarkably beautiful to be honest, but watered down, gene wise, none the less

See the link below and there's a list at the top of the page of all known python hybrids.
