My Sanzania Won't Eat

shedthegear Sep 23, 2006 05:57 PM

I have a 5 yesr old male sanzania (green phase). He hasn't eaten for about 4 months now. He never was a big eater, none of the sanzania are. My female eats once a week, but my other male only eats about once a month. This one, as I said, is going on 4 months. He is active and doesn't seem to have any problems with his mouth. He just won't eat.

Every week I leave a f/t med-large rat in his cage overnight. It's there every morning.

I am breeding my 2.1 Sanzania this winter and would love to get a couple of meals in him before breeding season.

Any advice????

Thanks

Sounds like you're no rookie so I assume you got all the basics covered. It may be time for the "big leap" and try one of those allegedly irresistable dwarf hamsters. I've never resorted to them yet, but a couple of stubborn males (of other species) have gotten me close. Some folks swear its the real deal...
Good luck!

My Sanzinia fast 4-6 months every year. They last fed about a month ago and I won't even offer food until March 2007. I give them 5-7 meals per year.

We're going into winter and as adults, your animals may start to refuse. So the one that has been fasting may continue to do so for months.

I'd go ahead and start the winter cooling and fasting if he has good bodyweight and not worry about him fasting for about 5 months.
