Enclosure picts

Arredondo Sep 23, 2006 08:45 PM

I've had a couple requests for picts of my "home-made" cages so here's an attempt. They're easier to make than they are to photograph, edit & send, I think!
Initial investment:
Table saw
Jig saw
Router
Electric drill
Pipe clamps
Elmers glue
After that, the sky's the limit & it's all a labor of love...

They look great.
Thanks for posting them.

They look really nice, just what I was looking for. I am moving and will no longer have a "reptile room", so I have to look for furniture grade cages. I was looking at the showcase cages, but I was reading the negative comments about them, so think I will pass. I am not handy with anything like cage building, so was looking for someone locally to build a bank of 6 for me. I liked Doug Dix's cages a lot, but he doesn't ship, so that's out. You aren't by chance either close to Wisconsin or Florida??? Again, great job, they are both functional and nice looking.

Thanks, Pam. Yes, we're in north Florida (Tallahassee).

Arredondo I was wondering the size of the cages and if you find them sufficient in size? The animals sure do look healthy for sure. I have do redo all my caging. Now I have a hodge-podge of different cages which makes routine husbandry a real pain. I like the idea of the front opening cages and the fact they are stackable. I will biuld on that line of thought. I am just unsure of size at this point. Thanks Tom Greb. Oh yeah, I just saw your response to my rather harsh criticism of your post concerning Wes below. No problem. I agree that the media has a tendency to sensationalize and misrepresent the creatures we hold dearly. Wes just relays it. Tom

Tom,
The enclosures are 48Lx21Dx18H. While maybe a bit cramped for Egyptians, the dimensions have always seemed adequate for good health & growth for our Uros.
I actually prefer sliders over front-openers so long as the track is high enough to not get clogged with substrate. I say that now AFTER I went to the trouble of constructing the front-openers. Alot of trial by error.
Kinda like my present experiment with reconstructing the evolution of snakes from lizards. As you can see here, I'm making progress. Or, rather, SHE is!

After posting this pict I got to thinking some folks not accustomed to Ornate behavior might think this could be a sick Uro. Trust me, she's fine. Ornates just do this & it's why they're my favorites. When they're "happy" they'll assume the silliest postures, so often with their legs tucked away like sliding seals. Just wanted to clarify this before I get accused of making fun of the handicapped!

Any interest in selling me some? I am in Charlotte Harbor by Punta Gorda...

Aahh, Charlotte Harbor... So many good memories of fishing & collecting Indian artifacts there! And on Big Mound Key is where I learned how painful Pygmy Rattler bites can be!
Pam, thankyou very much for your interest but, I don't make them for sale. I've considered it but just would never have the time to devote.
Have you looked at Boamaster? Just a thought. I don't think he's designed lizard cages in the past but, if anyone could...

Thanks for your response, I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. The problem I have found is that if the cage is functional for the uros, it looks like it belongs in the basement. These cages will be in my family room. I like the cages I have now, but I have them on the racks from Sam's club and of course you see all the light fixtures and cords. I will have to keep looking. I am going to Tinley Park for the NARBC show in two weeks, so I'll see what they may have. Thanks again, maybe we'll meet in Daytona one year. Best regards.

Is there a cabinet workshop within your reach? That could be the answer & you'd not have to deal with shipping. In the big cities they may be too busy to bother, but in the smaller, outskirt towns I think you could easily find the local cabinet maker who'd be glad to take on a different project. Just a thought.
Loraine & I'll be in Daytona in '07, wouldn't miss it for anything. Hope to meet you there.
