Is there a more natural substrate than the carpet that I can use?

I'd stay away from sand, too many worries about impaction and/or scratched eyes that way. I actually prefer paper towels, super easy cleanup, leo won't ingest it, can't hurt them in any way...

Some people use some sort of tile when going for a natural look. There is another method that is a bit of work to make, but in my opinion is worth it in the end:
