Yacare or Spectacled Caiman

drewsky Sep 24, 2006 03:10 AM

I am wondering how to tell the difference between these two species at a juvenile/early adult age. It is my understanding that the Yacare caiman will have blotches on the lower jaw while the Spectacled caiman will not. Is this true only in adults, or also in younger animals? I know in older Yacare the teeth are more pronounced, even protruding through the upper jaw, are there other differences that would help to distinguish the two?

the blotches are the best way to tell the differance, even with babies .... its very hard to tell hybrid yacare x crocodilus from pure yacare tho as they both have the blotches.
