Segamat: The Chen family in Segamat had a night to remember when they struggled for half an hour against a giant 17 foot long python.
The epic battle began at 11.40pm on the 15th of September. Two members of the Chen family, Chen Lianzhi and Chen Mingfa were at their home in Segamat when they heard their chickens making a loud fuss. Both men went to the chicken coop to investigate, and were shocked to find a large python inside, coiled around two of their chickens.
Deciding that the big snake was too much for them to handle alone, Mingfa immediately called his older brother Chen Wenting (37) to ask him for help. Wenting, who had gone out drinking with his friends, immediately hurried back.
The older Chen brother brought a torchlight along with him as he went to the coop to investigate. Startled by the light, the python slithered out of the coop and Wenting tried to grab hold of it with his right hand.
Unfortunately, the python then coiled itself around his arm in a crushing grip. When they saw his predicament, his father and younger brother rushed forward to help, holding on to the snake's tail and body to keep it from wrapping itself further around Wenting's body.
Then a friend called Wenting on his cellphone.
In desperation, Wenting answered the call and said: "A snake is coiled around me!"
The friend immediately got together some reinforcements, which included local RELA members that had just returned from the closing ceremony for the National Day celebrations. They then rushed off to the Chen residence on motorbikes.
By then, the snake, which had been struggling against the three members of the Chen family for 20 minutes, was beginning to tire. It gradually loosened its hold on Wenting's arm and was subdued. By then, the fingernails on his right hand had almost turned black from blood circulation loss. Thankfully, help arrived before any lasting harm was done.
The villagers were elated by their victory, measuring the snake's length (around 17 feet) and then having their pictures taken with it to commemorate the incident. After that, they bundled the snake into a sack. It's not known what they did with it after that.
However, not all python encounters ended so happily. 11 years ago, another man from Segamat had been strangled to death and partially swallowed by a giant python that was 21 feet in length. The incident happened on the 4th of September 1995, and the victim was Yu Xingquan, aged 29. In the end, the python was killed when policemen arriving on the scene fired 4 shots into its body.
