Not believing everything that you're told is a wise move, especially when it comes to animals and the stories that you hear about them.
Emerald boas do have a reputation for being feisty, and it's not without a certain amount of merit. Many of them can be aggressive, but, as with people, every snake is an individual and some emerald boas are not aggressive at all. Mine isn't. She is over ten years old and over six feet long and was mistreated before I got her (you can find her story if you search around in these posts), but she is a real sweetheart and I take her to schools for demonstrations.
The best thing to do, I believe, would be to find one that you can go see in person before you buy it (they are often expensive and you don't want to find out after you've spent your money that you've been lied to). You might also try to find one where the seller has photos of the snake reacting well to being handled. Also, there are several varieties of emerald boa, and the variety from the Amazon basin of South America (not to be confused with an "Amazon boa," which is another snake entirely) has the reputation of being much less aggressive. It is also the most expensive of emeralds, often selling for $1000 to $3000 or more, so that might be out of the question here.
Whatever you decide to do, good luck.
