Is my female veiled eggbound? Help please! especially any experienced breeders

anson May 20, 2003 01:57 PM

I traded 2 baby geckos for a female veiled from the petshop I go to for supplies. They told me they thought she was gravid. They had given me her first clutch last Dec because I have an incubator and they did not want to deal with newborns. I have her for over a month now and she has gotten HUGE. The outlines of her eggs are clearly visible under her skin and can be felt. She has continued eating and basking and acting like normal. She stays near the top of her cage and makes no attempt to dig in the mix of damp peat moss and sand I have placed in a tub at the bottom of her cage. Is this normal she is so huge and it has been at least a month. Her stool looks normal and the urates are bright white with the other part completely formed. I am very worried about her since I have no way of knowing how long she has been gravid. I also am worried about taking her to a vet if she is gravid because I do not want to stress her out. I need advice on what course of action I should take.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me. I have no experience with pregnant females.

As she is eating, basking, drinking normally she's not in trouble. An eggbound female will sit crouched in one spot, turn a darker stress color, refuse to eat, shut eyes, may look like she's straining to pass an egg...generally look sick. If she passes one or two eggs and just lets them drom from a perch she's either having trouble expelling the eggs or doesn't like the laying tub.

How long do veileds generally stay gravid before they lay the eggs?
Also I did notice some darker coloration than usual but I was on vacation last week and due to an air conditioning problem (I am in FL) I lost my female Nosey Be panther and several others are showing signs of stress. The person who cared for them came in the A.M and never noticed there was a problem and the best I can pinpoint the problem was three to four days before my return.
Temperatures in the entire room went into the high eighties and low nineties. And that is in the cooler parts of the room.
The gravid female veiled showed signs of dehydration. My oldest male is having problems with edema and my youngest male is not eating.
Is there anything I can do for them now that the air unit is repaired? Even though temps are back to normal they are showing signs of stress. The gravid female looks to be in the best shape compared to the others. Maybe because she is a veiled and can withstand higher temps.

For that specific question on gravid veileds I would read the recent articles on them at www.chameleonnews.com. I haven't bred veileds. As for the thermal stress...maybe it will take some time for them to recover, but I would wonder if there is some kidney strain from overheating and dehydration going on. If you can get each drinking you could try giving some Pedialyte by dropper as they swallow. Another idea is to check with www.herpnutrition.com about treatment and diet for kidney problems. Dr. Donoghue may have some ideas for you.

I will get the pedialyte right away and check out those websites also.
