Gray Banded Care

Geckofanatic23 Sep 25, 2006 06:41 PM

Hi everyone! This weekend I'm getting a new snake to add to my growing collection. I've researched several species, and Gray Banded Kings are on the list of snake I want to check out in person. I just have a few questions about them and their care. Could someone tell me, what their adult size is, what tank size for an adult, and what are the proper temps? I'm planning on using aspen bedding if I get a kingsnake, but is there something better to use? Also, I love the look of the Gray Bands particuarly with the "blue" coloring, is that Blairs phase or Alterna? Is their a size or a tempermant difference between the two phases? Sorry for the many questions, but out of all the snakes I've looked at, these guys are the ones I've found the least amount of husbandry info on. Thanks!

Size, they can get to about 3 1/2 ft but you will usually seem them smaller. There is a lot of variation, many people find that to be the most attractive part of this species and breed them based on locality. The bluish background is not typical, you are more likely to find a shade of grey, silver or charcoal. It is very important to know the feeding history of the animal you set your sites on, they can be tough to get started on mice, but can be switched over with some patience and work. As a first time player though, avoid the work and consider paying a little extra if needed for a good feeder. Many breeders keep them in sweater boxes but for a display a nice 10 – 20 gallon terrarium should do, just be sure to provide adequate and safe hiding places
