how can you tell if a snake is pregnant???

twiggy2151 Aug 05, 2003 06:59 PM

about a month ago, someone brought me a butler's garter snake, I was shocked when i seen it, it is fat, i mean really fat, and i cannot imagine a snake eating this much to make is so big, would this be a possible sign of pregnancy?? also if it is, when can i expect to see babys?? also, when a garter is pregnant, do they go on a hunger strike?? I cannot seem to get her to eat, all i have tried is nightcrawlers, and she shows no interest, or is she maybe trying to adjust to captivity?? how long should i go before i take drastic measures?? thanks for your help

Some snakes refuse nightcrawlers...Try fish. As for being gravid (the correct term for pregnancy in snakes) she could very well be. The snakes when gravid are normally heftier than usual, and some develop quite an attitude while gravid (most thamnophis will not stand their ground and act like a rat snake...gravid ones found will do this).
