Help! US to Australia- taking dragons?

oshadog Sep 25, 2006 10:37 PM

I might be moving to Australia from the US, I have two Bearded Dragons that are a part of my faimly and I don't want to have to give them up- (I'm the only lizard person I know; So I can't give them away because there's just no one close that I can trust with them, and I hate just thinking of selling them or adopting them out to a shelter. I don't trust fate that much) The problem is, it looks like no one is really allowed to import reptiles to Australia- as pets or otherwise (unless it's a zoo of course.) I'm not a 100% sure about this, more like 98% sure- so I'm hoping that someone here might know of someone who has legally taken their pet reptiles, bearded dragons most of all, there with them. Link's would be greatly appreciated.

Trust me, I seriously doubt there's any chance, but I just don't want to give up. I figured the least I could do was ask around herp sites.

Hi,

Well I dont have to much advice for as far as the taking your guys to the land down under. Have you researched on the net the rules and regulations of this? Might be the best place to look.

I wish you the best of luck geting your beardies down there tho!! It would be like a home coming for them!! lol I know that or atleast the last i read about beardies in australia it was illegal to own them down there and they do not allow them to be exported!!

I live in colorado tho so if worse comes to worse let me know. I'll provide them a good lovin home!!

Good luck,

Mike

This site may help. You deffinitely should contact the Australia government (should be a number on that site below somewhere) and make arrangements. Deffinitely get your dragons to a reptile vet here and make sure they are in perfect health and not likely to be carrying anyting that may be a problem (ie internal or external parasites, viruses that may spread to indigeous species etc). I also believe you need a permit to own bearded dragons as pets in Australia, in it may in fact, be banned completely to own dragons. I can't remember for sure.

As bearded dragons are native to Australia, it may not be as difficult to bring them in than non native animals. But if there is a ban to owning bearded dragons, you may not be able to bring them in either case, unless they do allow it if you have a permit to own one. (probably won't be able to breed them or anything like that though).

here is the link. I hope it is helpful. There are a few Australian natives who come to the reptile chats Friday and Sunday nights at kingsnake, spotting by there even during non hosted time may have you run into them. Unfortunately I can't remember their nics, so you will just have to ask the room if anybody is from australia or living there.
