New guy isn't eating..

AndrewFromSoCal Sep 26, 2006 01:59 AM

I got a young leo Saturday, he's probably 2-3 weeks i'd say, but I don't think he's eaten at all. He drank some water, at least that's what it looked like..(he kept sticking his tongue in it and then made a licking motion a bunch) He has calcium and meal worms and a hide and water and heat..I don't know. There is the possibility that head ate one, maybe two, but that's it.

Pointers?

It's fairly common for a newly acquired Leo not to eat for a week or so. Give him/her some time to adjust to it's new surroundings. Keep an eye on it, if things don't improve, a trip to a vet might not be a bad idea.

What were they feeding him before? If it was crickets, he might not understand that mealworms are food, for example. You could try popping a cricket or two in there at some point and seeing what his reaction is.

Make sure that all feeder insects are the correct size for him also.

Okay the shop said they were feeding the babies crickets..

Is there any way to get them to eat mealworms?

KellyTCS Sep 26, 2006 05:54 PM

I would make sure that the mealworms are very active. Sticking them under a heat lamp for about a minute does a great job of this. Obviously, you want to make sure he is still getting food, so feed him crickets also.

New leos in my experience take between 10-14 days to acclimate and become secure if the conditions are correct in there enclosure. When I get new ones I make sure they have good hides and water and proper temps during this period and minimal harrassment from me :P. For babies that are accustomed to crickets that i want to feed on mealworms I sit beside the enclosure dunk the mealworms in a cup of warm water for a few seconds one at a time this tends to make them wriggly and drop them in where the leo can see them. Never had one pass up a wriggling writhing mealworm unless it just wasnt hungry. after a few feedings like this I leave a shallow bowl with dusted mealworms in there from then on. I still feed mine crickets about twice a month just so they get to run around and get all excited about running prey.

Wow, I must be the luckiest guy ever then. Mine ate the night I brought her home and every night thereafter until she reached full size (she's 59 grams and about 9.5 inches last we measured her), excepting a couple of times when the last couple of her crickets croaked before I could get a chance to replace them. Either she was well socialized before I got her (unlikely, she was a juvenile in a pet store housed with probably 5-6 others in a container with opaque sides), or hunger overcame fear, or I did something right that nobody else does and I can't identify . This was actually true of my first leopard gecko as well (unfortunately the first was from petsmart and apparently had parasites that took a long time to kill him/her), so I wonder where everybody gets these stories about them taking forever to get comfortable and eat, because I've never seen one *not* eat right away!
