Sexing Hog Island Boas

reptileszz Sep 26, 2006 07:27 AM

Hi there, I have what I think is a male Hog Island Boa. He was given to me by someone that couldnt keep him any more. He bought him as a baby at a reptile show as a male. I hear that the spurs are bigger on males but since I do not have another one to compare to can I also go by tail length? Or should I just bite the bullet and find someone to probe him for me. I have not gotten around to learning how to probe just yet.

I could post a picture of that area if needbe.

Thank you very much,
Carole

Also wondering where one would get a really big hide for adults. I have an old black plastic one that my redfoot currently uses as his "garage". Would love to find another one for my boa but am pretty sure the biggest one out there is way too small now.

Thanks again,
Carole

I would get it probed Carole.
For my adults I use BIG dog feeding bowls that I get from a live stock store for hides. I cut out a hole in the rim with a coping saw and then turn it upside down for a hiding box. Randy W.

I cant help on the hogg sexing. However, cat litter boxes seem to work well as hides. I'll also seen people use upper and lower halves of pet taxis, for larger animals.

I'd get it probed. Hogs gave really long tails as it is, my adult females have tails longer than most colombian males.

Put your thumb at the vent line, your forefinger on his back. Gently but firmly rub down towards the tip of the tail. If it is a male you will feel two small balls slip out from under your thumb, if it is female you will feel nothing. If you have more babies at home you know the sex of try this on them first so you know what you are feeling for. There is a distict difference. This is the easiest way to sex babies and the least stressful. It works easily up to about 3 feet, but I've also had it work on thin animals up to 5 feet. The more muscle they get the harder it is use this method. I probe adults and rub youngsters.

I lived in Alaska for 16 years...while there I had seen a couple of items of "moose jewelry" and was bemused. But, when I stumbled on a site a few months ago that sported so many variations...I just had to save the pictures...grossly weird...can't imagine anyone buying it...but, it was funny to look at.

Congrats on the new site. Welcome to the cyberspace family. Nice babies, by the way. Especially that little possible keeper male hog. If you do keep him, I'd love to see how he turns out. He is saturated with color! If he was cleaner...sigh...but, were he cleaner, I'm sure there would be no "possible" about keeping him. Nonetheless, he is a real looker!!
