Breeding uromastyx....

-ryan- Sep 26, 2006 08:54 AM

Right now I'm focusing on working mostly with tortoises (russians), which are a very interesting breeding project, as well as fantastic pets.

I'm considering doing a breeding project with ornate uromastyx as well though. I've always been interested with uromastyx, even though mine was a rescue and is very weird for a uro. I think they are a species we should start focusing on breeding to reduce the amount of wild caught specimens that come in. Actually, for that fact alone I am considering breeding malis instead of ornates.

Anyways, the plan would be to keep them in my basement (where the breeder tortoises are) in a large rubbermaid stock tank, with about 10" of dirt (with a little sand mixed in) a plexi glass lid, with lights suspended inside. The actual cage decorations would be pretty basic. Lots of places that they can hide and bask on.

What does everyone here think of this project? Right now I don't have any money for it, but I'm hoping I might be able to do it next year or the following year. I only want to work with a trio. Where can I find sexed uros?

>>I only want to work with a trio.

Don't get your heart set on a trio. In most of the Uro species I keep (having not kept Malis) there have been outstanding dominance and aggression problems among females (sometimes males and females). I have had more luck with multiple males of different species than multiple females of the same.

Interesting.

More than likely I am just going to stick with my tortoise breeding project (I have enough clutter in my life right now, don't need more things to worry about). But I find it really interesting to hear what goes into breeding other species.

That was one amazing 180 degree turn...

If I didn't constantly rethink my reptile projects, I'd have too many reptiles.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to breed uros (as I stated in the first post), however upon looking at my life currently, it wouldn't be a great idea (hence the second post).

I can't make decisions on a whim. That would lead to impulse purchases of reptiles.
