heating question

gil6 Sep 26, 2006 03:20 PM

Hi, I have a small snake room that i would like to heat with a portable heater. The heater i am using is just a electric portable heater 1500 watts. I am getting a herpstat pro and would like to hook it up to the heater. Is this safe to do because i think the outputs on the herpstat pro are 400 watts each. Is it safe if i have the heater on low or is is a bad idea. thanks, chris

If your electric heater is the oil filled kind, you can usually switch it to a low setting that will draw less power. Usually the instructions will tell you how much it draws.

Or, for more safety, buy a decent thermostat that can handle the power. You don't need a proportional thermostat for what you are doing. The Ranco units that as sold by Granger.com are really great. I have one that I use with my oil filled heater every winter.
