snake lifespan?

ProfW Sep 26, 2006 08:49 PM

Hi all--

Apologies if this is a "duh" sort of question, but I've somehow never seen it addressed.

How long can one expect a well-cared-for corn snake to live? My own corn (who is calming down slowly but steadily, thanks, after an extensive period of not being handled) is about eight years old, IIRC, and seems as hale and healthy as ever.

Thanks.

Wayne

Up to 25 years if you really take excellent care of them and your snake has a little luck on its side

I had a amel corn live 11 years before a wasting illness took him down. His cage mate, an emory rat snake I had bought in 1994 (12 years) and she was full grown at the time so I could estimate that she was at least 3 years old at the time, making her a conservative 15 years of age now (maybe older). At work we have a female corn that we have had since 1993 (13 years) and she had been a school classroom pet for almost 5 years before that... putting her at around 18 years of age now. Not that there is any comparsion factor here, but at work we also have a copperhead that we got in 1984 (22 years) that was almost full grown at the time so we estimated he was maybe between 3-5 years old at the time making him a conservative 25-27 years old now.

I have a 19 year old male about 57 inches long. He is showing his age, but still eats and shed. He is having trouble digesting rodent skulls, so I feed him smaller prey items now.

While his muscle tone is not as great as it used to be, he still makes it around the enclosure to beg for rodents once a week!

I have a female Creamsicle who is 17+ yeas old, and in good health, although fatter than a German Sausage! Her mate passed away this past spring at the age of 16.

You have many happy years to look foward to with your corn. On the other hand, I may not outlive my yearling Desert Kingsnake!

Regards,

John D
