Strict Vegetarian Kinixys Homeana?

EMWhite Sep 27, 2006 01:41 AM

Hello all,
I have a mature male Kinixys homeana who will not eat meat. All of the others I have in my care relish earthworms and mice, he ignores them. He will eat fruits and veggies (prefers the fruit though) but refuses to eat any meat. From my understanding of them they are supposed to be highly omniviorous. Will his refusal to consume animal protein be detremental to his health long term? Is it possible that these tortoises, like bearded dragons, eat more animal protein when they are younger and gradually eat more and more plant matter until the latter is prefered? I would also welcome advice as to what to feed him, as stated he has been offered worms and baby mice. Any ideas? Thanks.

Keep offering it to him . All mine eat protein once a week , mostly concentrating on veggies and leafy greens . All my homeana love fruit . You might want to try a high quality chicken cat food such as Iams , Authority , or Nutro . It smells nice and raunchy and the tortoises love it . Make sure you mix it in with the veggies and leafy greens ! Good luck .

Have you tried any fish? I have had success feeding catfish chunks as well as filets from other fish. I cut them up into managable pieces and mix them in with their other food items. Some would even take the fish from my hands. Good Luck.

Take Care,
Jeff
