Silicon Glue ok?

littlediva Sep 27, 2006 08:26 AM

Sapphira has outgrown her basking spot. I bought 3 pieces of cork bark (some curved, some flat) to construct a new basking spot. I thought I was supposed to use silicon based glue, but when I got the glue home, I noticed in the warning it said "not for use in aquariums". I was intending on building and curing it outside and not putting it in the tank for at least 24 hours. Should I use this glue or is there something that is safer for the beardie that will work on cork bark. Actually, to ask another question, will this glue even work on cork bark? Is it ok to also secure with small nails?

The exact product I bought was GE Silicone II - 100% silicone sealant household glue.

Thanks. Cynthia.

Hi

Hey, I actually know the answer to this one!

Aquarium silicon glue is safe for animals and fish.

Silicon glue made for bathrooms and other construction is NOT safe. This grade of silicon glue contains arsenic to prevent the growth of mold and mildew in bathroom applications.

Exposure to the construction grade silicon glue won't immediately kill your animals, but over weeks, months, or years, it may slowly poison them.

thata great to know! thank you!

It's importaint to let the glue fully cure as it has some nasty gas it lets off while it cures and that Will be harmfull to your dragon. As for them saying not to use in aquriums, I belive that just means it may not work well to seal the tank, I could be wrong though. As for it being a good glue for cork? wood glue may be a better option as the silicone will probly not soak into the grains of the wood and will make a very weak bond. normal wood glue i think is non toxic. 2 part epoxy may work well on cork but allways let it set up fully as a lot of glues can give off toxic fumes when curing.
Another option may be hobby hot melt glue, that stuff seems to work ok on some things

Is wood glue ok for the Dragon?

The risk with non aquarium safe glue I think is mostly that some of the compounds within the glue can leach out in water. However I believe once fully cured (at least 24 hours for most kinds of glue or caulking) it will be safe for reptiles. Same with other forms of glues (epoxy, wood glue etc).
