Outside, breeding, and stress ?'s please

nymph Sep 27, 2006 11:03 AM

I was just wondering how long other cham owners spend outside with thier chams. Also, does anyone ever worry about birds?? I was wondering if there is anything out there I could use to wrap around my waist and then net over my arms and head so that they can get the sunlight but a bird can't get to them... is that stupid?? Also, does anyone have any really detailed breeding links??

I was curious as to what could be stressing out my cham. He is not happy. He is brown all day but green at night when he sleeps. I am getting him a bigger enclosure soon, he is almost getting to big for his current one. I have a basking spot about 90-95%, I have UVB and UVA lighting, I have branches spots to hide, and cool side. I mist him twice a day, and allow him to have as much food as he wants since he is does not gorge himself, I have Navi blocked from his view and I don't think he can see the geckos or the beardies. He gets sunlight when I can take him out and I give him some veggies. I dust the crickets, and I also gutload them. Could he just be shy or is there something I am missing?? He is about 7 mos old and CBB. Thanks!!

Get the bigger enclosure as planned. That may be part of it. At 7 months veileds can go through a brownish "phase" before their hormones really kick in. If he does see his reflection does he get normal veiled fire up colors? This might be a clue. How much are you handling him? If he is very reactive when you come near him it can be a sign that he is getting too much.

About outside...he may do better in a small cage outdoors than you holding him. I have gotten bird cages at garage sales and stapled window screen around them (if the bars are too wide to keep the cham from trying to squeeze through them). Also a Reptarium is an inexpensive way to take a portable cage outdoors for basking. Find a spot that will get sun for part of the day and be easy to keep an eye on while you do yard work or whatever. Always have part of the cage shaded or sheltered so he can hide if something gets too close. There should be one or two articles on breeding on the Chameleonnews ezine.
