strange noises during eating

keeper_paige Sep 27, 2006 11:07 AM

i have no idea what this could be. she seems to be acting normal, i have her tank in fairly normal parameters.
but my lorna is having somewhat labored breathing....or was.
i fed her her standard 3 mice on monday and when she lunged for the first one and constricted she made a loud sort of hissy wheeze noise, like an old engine. then she let it go, wheezed agian and proceeded to eat the mouse. when she consumed it she made a final, barely audible sort of wheeze, and not another noise came out of her for the remaining two mice.

im very worried about her, and there arent any good herp vets in my area. even at the zoo where i work our vet doesnt know aything about herps.(we usually have to try and diagnose our snakes ourselves)
so if anyone has ANY suggestions please let me know !!!
thank you
Paige

My snake makes a wierd sorta wheeze when she swallows too, but only once in a while. Since she's got no symptoms of a respiratory infection otherwise (no wheezing except for swallowing, no bubbly mucus, nothin abnormal) I figure it must just be one of those things.
Could be it's something horrible, but since my snake's been doing it off and on for a while now and she's just fine, I doubt it's too bad.

....something completely natural.

Snakes have a secondary trachea/esophagus (one of the two..I'm not a doctor ) located on the floor of the mouth to allow them to breathe while eating.

Next time your snake eats watch the floor of its mouth and you'll see the secondary trachea/esophagus open and close to allow the snake to continue breathing with its 'mouth full'.

If the wheezing sound corresponds with the opening of the secondary trachea/esophagus then you have nothing to worry about.

Hope this helps.

It could be a distortion of the glodise wile the mouse was going across it ,but they can extend the glodise to the side and it be unupstructed . if there is not any sign of mucise or bubbles from here noise then it not a upper R.I. but if not shore and don't wount to take a chanse you can give it Metronidazole 50mg/ml suspensio(1cc) give 15ml.or3cc perr each 60gr.in wate once every 10-14 days for a total of 3 doses . and it will not hert it if it is not sick it will just increace its appitite ok. good luck with all you do !!!!
