panther laying eggs

chamgranny Sep 27, 2006 12:41 PM

I had my 2 panthers together overnight. The next day she took on a differant color and she looked like the pictures in the books for a gravid female panther. I put her in the egg laying chamber which is a big huge rubbermaid container with moist soil. I know this works because I used it for my veileds. This is my first panther laying eggs. I put her in the chamber on day 22. Today is day 34 and she still has not laid her eggs. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Has she been digging at all?

Some panthers can take up to 45 days to lay from what I've read. (I've never had one that takes that long myself.)

Can you describe the container that you have had her in to lay her eggs please?

She has not been digging at all. The container she is in is a tall rope tote that you can use for laundry or putting cold drinks in. I used the same container for my veileds and they dug all the way to the bottom and laid their eggs. It is filled with moist soil.I have a mesh screen across the top. I have alight on top of the screen. I am continuing to feed and hydrate her.

I just went and checked on her and she had escaped out of her egg laynig container. I found her near her cage heading to the top. I am going to hydrate her and put her back in tomorrow. Should I wait until. she is wondering the bottom of her cage to put her back in the container. Thanks guys

You said she escaped her egglaying bin...that's why I use a 65 liter rubbermaid container and put the lid on it. I cut a bit hole in the lid and screen it over. This allows me to put the lid on when the female is in there without suffocating her. I can put a small light over the screen---remember, the container will heat up quicker than one that is completely open on the top. I can feed her and water her while she is in there...but just make sure that no uneaten insects are taken out so they won't munch on the eggs or her while she is laying the eggs.

You said..."Should I wait until. she is wondering the bottom of her cage to put her back in the container"...I put a small container of washed sandbox sand in the female's cage. It needs to be big enough for her to fit into (when its empty) with a bit of room on all sides. I fill it about 2/3rds full of sand. This gives her a place to start digging to show me that she is ready to lay the eggs. This way I don't have to worry about why she is wandering around the floor of her cage.

Hope this helps and that yours will soon lay her eggs. They are such a worry!
