Please help determine tortoise gender...

Frogger91 Sep 27, 2006 04:18 PM

Hello, I have a three-year-old sulcata, and I'm having a little trouble figuring out the gender. I've attached an image of the tail and can post some more if it's necessary; it really looks like a female, but it's very aggressive, already has prominent "tusks", and I could swear I've seen it mount objects. Thanks for the help!

Is the shell concave or flat?

If its concave its a male. (It makes it easier to mount the females when mating)

If its flat, then most likely a female.

From what I can see, it looks like a female.

How big is he/she? It's hard to tell the gender at 3 years old, but from the picture looks like a girl.

looks male to me. From what I have seen with sulcatas the females usually have a U shape and males have a V shape.

supposedly you should be able to tell by any front bottom shell projections-just below the head. they use for fighting other males. so how about a shot of that area
