Green tree frog rescue...need help...

Nicodemus Sep 27, 2006 05:45 PM

I was given a pair of green tree frogs as a rescue.

One of them looks like a pale yellow almost white. And I noticed he was having trouble with his back legs...not using them much. Looking at his toes, they look like twigs! ...like they are shriveled up or were burned down to the bone....poor little guy. He doesn't look too good, and I'm afraid he won't make it....

Any thoughts?

This forum unfortunately does not move very quickly. There always seem to be people on the treefrog forum at repticzone.

First thing is to make sure their temps are right and humidity as well, water dish. Make sure all the water is treated with a product like Aquatize to remove chlorine and chloramine. Make sure it is eating, I would put at least 6 crickets in a night (dusted every other day with Reptical), they should be about the size of the distance between the frogs eyes, too big could cause an impaction. If they eat and poop that is a good sign.

You can do a search for "green tree frog caresheet" on Google for the exact temps/humidity, I'm guessing around 75-80 day and around 70 nights (need gauges). Make sure they have climbing vines and branches as well as hides on the bottom.

Well, everything has been set up properly in the tank. I mae sure of that first thing.

I'm just curious about the toes. I've never seen anything like it, except maybe a really bad burn, and the lady said they'd never get that close to the lamp she had...

the lamp was inside the tank? even if they didn't get close during the day, it doesn't mean that they didn't jump on it after the lights went out and before the lamp had time to cool. I would keep them on paper towel substrate too. And if you were really worried about them, seperate them. At least they won't have to worry about each other while they are getting adjusted/better.

It should be noted that six crix a day is probably way to much for your frogs, I don't even feed my white's that much! And take them out in the morning, so they don't add extra stress/eat your frogs. If you just wanted to make sure they were eating, put a couple in after the lights go out and check in a little bit. if they ate those, put a couple more in. If not, try again another night. Six is what I give my two white's every three days.

I don't know if Whites are different eaters than Greens, but my Red Eyes (they are not quite adults) get fed now every other day (was every day) and I put in anywhere from 6-10 crickets each time. Now these are not adult crickets, they are usually around 1/4".

I do lose a couple now and then to the water area but they do eat the rest, as I never see any big crickets. The crickets can hide since the tank is so dense and there are places they can go that the frogs can't. My frogs are always waiting for their feedings so I don't know if mine just eat alot because they are still young or what. They are not fat and are actually quite slender, so maybe there is just a difference between Whites and Greens and Red Eyes.

So without knowing how old the frogs are, I would probably err on the greater side and if there were leftover crickets, cut back. Also if they are adult frogs they could go every couple days.

No, the lamp was not inside the tank.

The injured one did not make it unfortunately. I'll see how the other one does, but he at least looks healthy with no injuries...
