getting a bearded

carpenterman Sep 27, 2006 06:09 PM

Well this weekend i'm getting a bearded dragon. I was thinking of getting two, but wasnt sure on how to males would get along. Can anyone help me out on that. also should i just buy a bigger cage now instead of a smaller one. i know they grow quick and just dont want to have spent the money for a cage he will use for just a few months.
Thanks dave

Congrats on your decsion to get a beardie! There great lil lizards.
You may started one of those huge debates. "Should I keep them in the same enclosure and how will they get along?" lol I think you just might find a little bit of everything once people start repling!
IMO I would say no, house them seperately. That way you dont have the worry of how they will respond to each other. You wont have to wirry about them fighting over food where one will be more dominant when feeding and actually cut the other one off, then you have the problem where you see one growing and the other basically starving. Theres always the fights that can occur for whatever reason and then you run into injuries, vet bills etc.

If I remember correctly beardies in the wild are for the most part solitary animals only getting together as adults to mate. If I am right on this then that should give anyone the best answer on wether or not they should be housed together.

I have read many places that it's not a good idea for two males to be in the same housing but a male and female would be ok as long as they are the same size, otherwise the thought of " if it can fit into my mouth, it must be food!" from taking over.
Some do say not to even house a male and a female unless you are mateing them. I would hate to have an unexpected clutch of eggs when one does not have the set up to incubate them.
As of today I havce two dragons and I just set up a diffrent encloser for her.
